Makoto Tsukimoto (nazywany też Smile) to cichy licealista od dzieciństwa przyjaźniący się z głośnym i energicznym Yukatą Hoshino (o przezwisku Peco). Obaj należą do okolicznego klubu tenisa stołowego – bynajmniej nie można im też odmówić talentu w tej dziedzinie, choć osobowość Smile’a zawsze powstrzymuje go przed wygraną z Peco. Trener kubu dostrzega jednak jego wrodzone umiejętności i postanawia obudzić w nim ducha sportowej rywalizacji.
